Vienna, the city of Music

5th-7th May 2012
We decided to spend the May bank holiday weekend away and what a wise choice-we left behind a grey and drizzly London and arrived in a sunny and warm Vienna.

We took advantage of the brilliant weather hiring bikes and riding the Ringstraße, a tree lined boulevard which traces the route of the old city wall. It gave us the opportunity to check out the town & see what we might want to explore further over the following days.

In the evening we glammed it up & went to watch the Bruckner Orchestra Linz at Musikverein-apparently the venue with the best acoustics in Vienna. We listened to a bit of Mozart & Haydn but the most entertaining part was watching the percussionists show their talents playing 'Also sprach Zarathustra' by Richard Strauss-perhaps most notably known as the music from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Click here for a listen.

On our second day we wandered all about the Innere Stadt, checking out some magnificent buildings & stunning sculptures and resplendent crown jewels, re fuelling on tasty Viennese food & drink such as sausages, schnitzel, Saccher torte & coffee.

Schloss Schönbrunn was our final tourist destination for the weekend. We walked through 40 of the most sumptuous palace rooms, learning a little along the way about the Habsbergs and their rule over Austria, thanks to our informative audio guides. We also learnt the art of making Apfelstrudel and of course had a tasting at the Strudelshow then spent the next two hours wandering the amazing palace grounds. Julian challenged himself with the maze(maybe receiving a tiny bit of guidance from Danielle who cheated by walking up the exit, straight to the viewing platform ) but we also made the trek up to the Gloriette-a bit like an over sized, rectangular gazebo- climbed to the terrace and were rewarded with some amazing views of the palace & surrounds.
